The Introduction of Coinage in Tibet

Nicholas Rhodes

Tuesday 18 May 2010, Warburg Institute

Nicholas Rhodes will talk about the early coinage of Tibet up to the 19th Century, starting with Nepalese coins circulating in and specifically struck for Tibet up to the mid-18th century. When political changes in Nepal cut the supply route, it caused the Tibetans to strike their own coins in small numbers from 1763. This led to political disputes between Tibet and Nepal over coinage resulting in war in 1789. The Chinese then became involved politically, militarily and in the production of coinage from 1792. Finally, the situation stabilized in the 19th century with large numbers of coins struck in Tibet for local circulation.

Nicholas Rhodes is General Secretary of the Oriental Numismatic Society and author of many books on the coinage of the Himalayan States.
