For the Viking Kings of York in the early tenth century, coin production was not an economic necessity but a politically motivated act. These kings used coins and other media to present an image to their subjects and to their neighbours. Drawing on recent research this talk will use the evidence of coins to unravel the threads of kingship, power and economics.
Megan Gooch is the curator of the HSBC Money Gallery at the British Museum, and is presently undertaking a PhD on the Viking Kingdom of York at the University of Durham.
